During Your Dog Portrait Session
Your dog's session is not about forcing perfect poses or asking them to behave like a professional model.
It is about creating a calm, comfortable environment where your dog can relax, settle in, and show us who they are.
Every session is dog-led, meaning we work with your dog's personality, energy, and comfort level to create portraits that feel authentic to them.
Arriving at the Studio
Your dog does not have to walk in ready to perform.
A Calm, Dog-Led Approach
Studio portraits are created through patience, observation, and timing.
Rather than rushing your dog into a pose, I watch for the moments that show their personality—the curious look, the head tilt, the goofy expression, or the quiet confidence that makes them uniquely them.
Your dog sets the pace. We take breaks when needed, adjust when needed, and follow what helps them feel comfortable.
Your Dog Gets to be a Dog
When you arrive at the studio, we'll take time to settle in and let your dog get comfortable. There's no need to rush into portraits. Whether your dog is outgoing, a little nervous, full of energy, or happiest taking things slowly, we'll work with who they are.
Using the Background Colors we discussed during your Design Consultation, I'll guide the session while giving your dog room to move, explore, take breaks, and show their personality. I'll help with positioning and expression when needed, but perfect obedience isn't part of the job description.
If you'd like to be in some of the portraits, we'll make room for that, too.
See Your Artwork in Person
Your portraits are about more than having digital files tucked away on your computer. They're an opportunity to bring your favorite face into your everyday life.
During your studio visit, you'll also have the chance to see my wall art and albums in person. We'll look at the different finishes, sizes, and options so you can start imagining how your portraits might look in your home.
There's no need to make your final decisions that day. You'll see your portraits for the first time at your virtual Image Reveal, where we'll choose your images and finalize your order together.
Just Enjoy Your Dog
I'll take care of the photography. To capture specific images, I’ll help guide you on how to have your dog move around the set to keep the experience fun.
You can focus on spending time with your favorite four-legged person, knowing we'll make the most of the time we have together.
Your dog does not need to know a long list of commands to have beautiful portraits.
Some dogs love the spotlight. Some are more reserved. Some are more interested in exploring the studio than looking at the camera.
The goal is not to create a perfectly posed version of your dog.
The goal is to capture the version you know and love.

Every dog comes into the studio with their own personality, comfort level, and opinions about new things. Some dogs walk in ready to work. Others need a little time to investigate every corner first. Both are completely normal.
The session is designed around your dog’s pace, and I’ll guide you through every step.

The first part of your session is all about letting your dog settle in.
They’ll have time to sniff the studio, explore the space, and get comfortable with me before we start photographing. (There are always plenty of interesting smells to investigate — previous clients leave behind a lot of “messages.”)
This is also when we’ll chat about your dog, their personality, and the details you shared in their profile. I’ll explain how we’ll work together to create portraits that feel like your dog.
You don’t need to know how to pose your dog or get the perfect expression. That’s my job. I’ll guide you throughout the session and use you as your dog’s favorite source of attention, reassurance, or motivation when needed.

Your first backdrop will already be set up when you arrive so your dog can investigate it before we begin.
Once they’re comfortable, we’ll start creating portraits. I’ll capture a variety of images — from classic portraits and close-ups to full-body shots, profiles, and those little personality-filled moments that make your dog unique.
Every dog is different, so I adjust the session based on what works best for them. If your dog has sore joints, gets tired easily, or needs more breaks, we’ll make adjustments to keep them comfortable.
You’re also welcome to join your dog for a few portraits if you’d like.

Time for a quick backdrop swap!
You and your pup wil step out of the studio for a couple of minutes while I change the paper. This keeps the experience positive and prevents the sound of rolling backdrop paper (which can sound suspiciously like thunder to some dogs) from becoming an unnecessary stressor.
Use this time to let your dog explore the hallway, get a few extra sniffs, or take a quick potty break outside if needed. It’s just a short reset before we move on to the second color.

After a quick backdrop change, we’ll move into the second half of the session.
By this point, most dogs are feeling much more confident in the studio. They know the routine, they’re comfortable on the paper, and we can focus on capturing even more expressions and personality.
Many dogs start getting tired toward the end of the session, but those quieter moments are often where some of the best portraits happen.

By the end of the session, your dog has usually earned a well-deserved break from being adorable.
We’ll make sure you have everything you brought with you, I’ll walk you through the next steps, and you’ll head home with a post-session guide so you know what to expect next.
Then your pup gets some final scratches and praise for their hard work — because being adorable is a very demanding job!
This is one of the most common concerns I hear, and it is exactly why sessions are designed to be dog-led.
Nervous dogs are given time to warm up. Energetic dogs are given opportunities to move and reset. Senior dogs are photographed with their comfort and mobility in mind.
There is no expectation that your dog will walk into the studio and immediately know what to do.
That is my job.

Once your session is complete, the next step is selecting and editing the strongest portraits from your session.
You’ll see the best photos from your session during virtual Image Reveal. This is when you’ll choose your favorites and deciding which portraits you would like to hang on your wall, what makes it into the heirloom album, and what image you can’t live without

Accidents happen. Dogs are dogs, and the studio is prepared for that.
There is no need to feel embarrassed or stressed. We'll clean it up, take a moment, and keep going.

During the session, you’ll be able to see all the photos on a large monitor as I capture them.
Unedited portrait proofs are delivered within a week of your session. After submitting your favorite proofs, the final edited images will be delivered within two weeks.

Some of the most memorable portraits happen when dogs are not focused directly on the camera. Expressions, movement, and personality all tell part of your dog's story.

We take breaks whenever needed.
A successful session is not about rushing through as many images as possible. It is about creating an experience where your dog feels comfortable enough to be themselves.
