Winston + Riley: The Rescue Dogs Who Somehow Found Their Match
Some dogs arrive in your life looking like they belong together.
Others arrive separately, from different places, with different histories, and somehow end up looking like they were issued as a matching set.
That was Winston and Riley.
Winston, a three-year-old German Shepherd mix, and Riley, a two-year-old German Shepherd mix, came into Brittany and Jordan's lives independently. Yet standing side by side, you'd assume they were littermates. They share the same warm sandy coat, dark eyes, black muzzle, and athletic build. The biggest giveaway is their ears.
Winston's ears stand straight up like highly efficient satellite dishes, seemingly capable of monitoring neighborhood activity several blocks away. Riley's ears, meanwhile, have a softer, floppy look, as if they simply decided halfway through the process that standing up seemed like too much work.

For their dog portrait photography session, we photographed them on Blue Mist and Lavender. While Blue Mist is one of my favorite go-to colors because it works beautifully with almost every coat type, the Lavender backdrop ended up stealing the show.
The soft purple tones brought out the warmth in both dogs' coats and created some truly striking colorful dog portraits. Their golden coloring practically glowed against it.
Before the session, Britney gave me one important piece of information about Riley.
When Riley gets excited, she needs something in her mouth.
Ideally she grabs a toy, but she may settle for a random object. That excitement has to go somewhere! As someone who lives with a dog who greets us at the door carrying an object like a ceremonial offering, I completely understood the assignment.
Britney had already thought ahead and suggested choosing a toy that coordinated with the backdrop colors if Riley needed it during the session. It's one of those small details that speaks volumes about how well people know their dogs.
As it turned out, Riley didn't need the backup plan. She settled in beautifully and was fully invested in earning treats.
Winston was equally motivated.
Both dogs were energetic, attentive, and incredibly fun to photograph. They had that rare combination of regal presence and complete goofball energy. One moment they looked like they belonged on the cover of a magazine. The next they were making expressions that had everyone in the studio laughing.
One of my favorite parts of any Twin Cities dog photography session is finding ways to photograph the things that make each dog uniquely themselves.
For Winston, that meant capturing a trick he shares with Britney. He'll walk directly between her legs and stand there proudly, as though he has successfully parked himself in the exact spot he was aiming for all along. We created a portrait featuring Winston framed perfectly between Britney's legs, showcasing both the connection and trust they share.
For Riley, it was all about belly rubs.
She rolled onto her back while Britney stood over her scratching her chest, and the expression on Riley's face said everything. Complete happiness without a care in the world.
We also created several family portraits with Britney and Jordan. Some featured everyone smiling at the camera together, while others focused primarily on Winston and Riley with their humans standing behind them. I particularly love these portraits because they keep the dogs as the visual focal point while still preserving the people who make up their world.
The hardest part of this session wasn't capturing the photos. It was narrowing them down afterward.
Normally, clients receive around 60 to 70 unedited proofs to select their favorites from. Winston and Riley's gallery ended up with closer to 100 because every time I thought I'd narrowed things down, another image deserved to stay.
The result was a collection of portraits that captured not just how these dogs look, but who they are right now.
That's ultimately what my dog portraits sessions are all about.
I don’t aim to create perfect poses or expect flawless behavior.
My goal is to preserve the current version of the dog who currently greets you at the door, steals your spot on the couch, rolls over for belly rubs, and becomes a vitally important family member along the way.
For Britney and Jordan, that meant leaving with a custom album filled with the moments that make Winston and Riley unmistakably Winston and Riley.
And honestly, narrowing it down any further would have felt unfair for these two pups.
