What Happens if My Dog Has an Accident During Their Session?
I get it — accidents happen. And if you’ve ever worried about what could go wrong during a portrait session, you’re not alone. Whether it’s a puppy, a senior dog, or an energetic little whirlwind, pets are unpredictable by nature. But here’s the good news: a potty accident doesn’t ruin the session, and it’s something we handle calmly and professionally every single time.
At The Dog Photog, I’ve seen it all — from a tiny “oops” on the backdrop to a sudden zoomie that ends in a little mess. The key is preparation, patience, and knowing what to expect. Here’s how we navigate accidents, so you can feel confident and relaxed while we capture your dog’s personality.
Studio Prep & Potty Breaks
Every session includes built-in time for:
Sniffing and exploring the studio before the camera comes out
Playtime and short breaks to release energy
Scheduled potty breaks
Before arriving, make sure your dog has a chance to go outside. The studio has a convenient grass strip along Stinson Boulevard, perfect for a quick pre-session bathroom break. During the session, I’ll schedule at least one pause for potty breaks — or a walk down the hall — while switching backdrops. These breaks help keep your pet calm, focused, and happy.
Accidents Happen — Here’s How We Handle Them
If your dog does have an accident, we simply pause, clean up, and continue the session. It’s not unusual, and it’s never a big deal.
That said, if something in the studio is damaged beyond repair — knock on wood, this hasn’t happened yet — I will request reimbursement to replace the item. This ensures the studio remains safe, clean, and ready for all pets.
Most accidents are minor, easy to manage, and don’t affect your portraits at all. Preparing with a potty break before the session and letting me know about any special needs goes a long way toward preventing stress for both you and your pet.
Tips to Minimize Accidents
Take your dog for a potty break immediately before arriving
Bring a towel or small blanket that smells like home if your dog has anxiety
Let me know if your pet has any medical needs so I can adjust the session
Even with preparation, accidents can happen — and that’s perfectly fine. My goal is to make your dog’s session fun, stress-free, and full of memorable moments.
